It seems over the years the words "Artist Series" has pretty much (d)evolved from a small collection of envelope pushing versions of the normal product into a pseudo intellectual catchphrase that corporations throw around to automatically generate hype within the 15-30 age group.
Case in point, Gibson Artist Series Guitars
Sure, number 2 actually looks pretty. The rest is mediocre at best (ugly). Dear Multi-million Dollar Money Guzzling Focus Grouping Corporations and your Uncreative Marketting Shindigs, how long more are you going to do this "make our product a template for half-baked artists to doodle on" fad/trend before you realise it's looking hella dumb (& ugly).
Nike done did it now EVERY sneaker company's got "Artist Series".
Mountain Dew threw some money at a few starving ILLUSTRATORS and pulled the same act, which means F&N's gonna do the same crap soon.
Every "Urban Vinyl" toy's been sent to random people who can paint nonsense an all white version of their 6 inches of cute. Then throw a freakin exhibition at a boutique that sells a series of Tshirts designed by the same artists at a premium.
Now every bag company, Apple product case manufacturer perfume maker's jumpin in.
Oh right we all just want to earn a quick hipster buck. My bad.
Here, know what, I'll help you out.
Mc Donald's got them plain white cups they use when you too cheap to pay for mineral water. Get some underground graffiti artists to doodle on it in your Red-Yellow colour scheme. Instant street cred.
7-11 y'all gotta work out an Artist Series of Eco-Friendly Tote Bags. Now not only are you in with the hip crowd, you're going green too. 2 bandwagons at once. Oh wait set up a website where we can "custom" (really just choose colours for) our own design. 3 bandwagons. Don't forget to set up a pop-up shop right outside your own stores selling it. 4 bandwagons. That's a new world record.
Oh and if you're wondering what to do after that's done, you can either do Series #2 or just collaborate with everyone else and their mother and you're the new Head Porter.
