Educate

Everytime you walk into a class, and you're standing in front, you're presented an opportunity to spread certain ideas and change the world. No other job in the world gives you this opportunity.
Sure it's not easy. Kids come in late, get rowdy, throw verbal tomatoes at you. But that's no excuse for you to not give a shit.
Set ground rules. Speak confidently. Smile. Use a microphone, we won't laugh. Engage the kids. Interact. Build Rapport. Set challenges. Inspire. Do it well, because it is agonising when you read off the slides and no one can hear you. Do it well, because although they might not show it then, they'll appreciate you in time.
Do it well, because although the kids might not remember your ideas, they'll remember your lessons forever.

Sometimes it's Just About Choosing the Right Tablecloth

Design Society Conference with the very awesome Winnie. Felt slightly weird since I don't exactly do design much anymore but was still nice to see how some of Singapore's best get to where they are. While it felt slightly odd, it really did make me want to do some design again.

Local design rockstars :Phunk Studio were in session (4 guys @ Left). So was Chong Jin (Green Tee), a lecturer from Temasek Design School that (fortunately) never got the nightmare of teaching me. This was the Q&A session and i really was itching to ask them "What's up with the rolled up jeans?"

Things I've learnt:
-Make mistakes while you still can afford to.
-Sometimes even the best Designers smoke through.
-The Salvation Army is a good source of cheap, chic furniture.
-Do and learn from doing. Even namecards and brochures.
-Find people who you can drink teh tarik and talk cock with.
-Kelley Cheng is cute/funny/cute.
-Most designers like most of us are quite cock up.
-Creativity is more important than budget or time.

-Design can be fun.

Coming Up With Book Names Must Be Tough

Sorry for the recent slump in posts! Been leading a slower, more laid back lifestyle recently.

All Black Everything

The cool thing about splatter is that there's no right or wrong. Just imagine the paint brush is a samurai sword and start slashing.

I'm going to see how many people believe these are Converse Japan's Collaborations with a fictional ink artist named Takuma Yamamoto.

What If We Saw Gold for What It Is?

"Gold is pretty but virtually useless. Somebody decided it has worth, and everybody accepted this decision. The natives in the Americas thought Europeans were insane because of their lust for such a useless yellow substance."

It's Nice to See All of You Again

From the ones that gleefully came to say hi and those too shy to even make eye contact, I hope you guys get into the courses/schools you want to and go on to enjoy yourselves there.
If anyone from Yuying Secondary is still reading this, thanks for the support over such a long period of time!
Please let me know who you are by tagging the board, regardless of when you read this or whether I actually know you personally, just tag!!
Seeing you guys really makes me want to go back and teach you guys. :-(

Sea of Red

Note to self: Changing ideas and trying new stuff in the middle of a project usually isn't a very bright idea.

Changing Rooms Should Have Chairs

It just made so much sense when I walked into Front Row's one with a heavy bag and a work day's worth of fatigue.

I ended up buying that shirt. Don't tell my mother.

Superheroes Are Not As Cool As Citizen Journalists

When Singaporeans see something wrong, they don't do anything to correct it. They film/photograph it and collectively complain about it on the internet.

The Price of Nostalgia

So the story is in Taiwan their bubble tea chain 50嵐 (Wu Shi Larn) had this once crazy chocolate drink that just doesn't exist here.
Then for the longest time, people have been telling me that they've opened a branch in Singapore somewhere in Toa Payoh, but I've never had the chance to go check it out until now. ZT and me trekked to Toa Payoh, got lost, called a friend, stepped up to the counter and told the kind girl that I was looking for a drink called Ke Ke Bah Lay.

So I had my first sip in maybe 2 years but found that it just didn't seem all that great anymore. Sure it still tasted really good, but it didn't taste like the heaven I remembered it to be.
But I guess, just making me remember the good times in Taiwan, that's good enough for me.
Koi Cafe is at BLK 190A Toa Payoh #01-562. Also at Marine Parade and Ang Mo Kio!
When you're there ask for a large cup of Ke Ke Bah Lay (Cocoa Barry in English) and 70% sugar. It's a little bitter so add a scoop of ice cream and you're good!

Walking on Water

In so many ways, this is the next level. The technicality, the idea, the execution, and the fact that no one has successfully painted on the mid soles of shoes before... Insane.
