The Way Overdue, Baybeats Day 3

Probably the biggest of all days, caught Inch Chua's soulful stuff at the chillout stage. Not my thing but gotta admit she's actually pretty good.

Zero Sequence which is a quite fierce Progressive Rock outfit, did an excellent job, plus I ound out that their keyboardist is a Secondary School friend~!? GOGO MEITING!! Then The Ambassadors, a Pop punk ish band from Philippines ripped it up pretty good. Listenable, fun, refined punk rock.

15 minutes before the Anberlin set, we squeezed together with Sherm's friends to just behind the moshpit so we'd be close but not pancaked. The spherical things below are actually heads.

This is the number of people behind us. Ridiculous. I think they're one of the few bands that can bring Hardcore kids + Church kids + Indie kids together.

They started 15mins late and started lacklustre. But once they fixed the messed up mic and launched into the crowd favourites (EVERYONE around me knew every line to every song. Crazy) it was clear this Baybeats is one not to be forgotten. Live4Music took some good videos for you (more @ their Channel including West Grand, Hans!).

There Is Never Any End.

There are always new sounds to imagine: new feelings to get at. And always, there is a need to keep purifying these feelings and sounds so that we can really see what we've discovered in its pure state. So that we can see more clearly what we are. In that way, we can give to those who listen, to the essence, the best of what we are. But to do that at each stage, we have to keep on cleaning the mirror.

Welcome to um..

Church?

Few weeks back we performed at City Harvest's Basement 4 Auditorium. Before Ion Orchard the only other B4 I know of was too damn secret to mention >.<>.<

The crazy thing is that the production crew for the Church service produces a Hi-5 level production with singing and dancing and a kick ass live band seemingly every week for all the kids that come in. It's slightly formulaic but it sure ain't easy to pull off.

You can't see it but the kids are RUNNING in.

Backstage with light bulb lined mirrors! ^^

15 secs to showtime.

The very kickass sounding band!

Did I mention we even had Jervonne follow us around the Church making sure our EVERY need was taken care of? You did an awesome job, and I really enjoyed having you around! Thank You!

I realised that most EVERYONE at Church seemed truly incredibly happy. The kids, the singers, sound tech, they were all very accomodating, and kind and cheerful, and for a moment I felt that hey, I wouldn't mind being this happy myself.

Another BLOG?

As part of my Communications class we have to get a blog and talk about "media texts" and "social issues". Or something. It's mostly quite academic stuff and can be quite tough to read.
But if you're up for it, If x is where the saucers fly needs you to post relevant comments on the articles to bump up my grade.
Yes it's partly a popularity contest and yes there's a small puzzle on there and yes I'm begging for votes.

Big Boss's Birtyhday, the alumni just can't not do something crazy. So they got a few balloons which some of us doodled on (Fun!). Being a Chopsticks practitioner, I referenced the very manly scar he got on his face from a very unmanly incident involving a Choptick Combo.

Once that was done,
Can you imagine the amount of stares I get from people. I saw many hp cameras and I am probably in stomp with captions like "Retarded Grown Up Acting Cute with Balloons". It was getting embarrassing to the extent that I will tell those who have been staring at me for too long that the balloons were for my birthday.

via Colin! Hope you had a great one!

Gee!

For every person who comes up to me telling me how yoyos is the lastest craze/fashion/trend/fad among kids I want to tell a 16 year old girl that their current pre occupation with Korean media is the exact same thing.

5-14 year old males watch the cartoons and ads on TV and their friends and follow the herd. While at the core of yoyos is the challenge to do ever more difficult tricks, the zeitgeist of their generation is a belief that money will solve all/many problems. This drives them to think that $100 dollar yoyos as opposed to disciplined practice will make them better players. Which in reality actually achieves the opposite: A new generation of yoyo players without proper foundations (which can only be learnt on cheaper basic yoyos) who might be able to pull off sloppy moves but are at best ignorant to why they just can't get their tricks to look right.

12-21 year old females get bombarded by the pop music and television dramas, all wrapped in autotune and perfect makeup. While mass media narrowly defines a slim body, porcelain skin and a perfect smile as desirable, the receptive minds of the younger generation push them to experiment with make up, plastic surgery, $3000 bags and push up bras. Those lacking in self esteem get a boost in confidence, while the rest of the herd just want to fit in. (To those damn tight leggings)

Mass Media + Herd Mentality. We're human after all.

Just.. Jam It Harder!

Ian teaches you how to Boing Boing!
Quite a few newer players are having trouble with this trick and Ian does an amazing and simple job of teaching the trick with so so so much style.

And I ain't even talking about the dancing.

It's the Kids: Fuchun Secondary Teachers' Day Dinner & Dance

*Will update with pictures etc. soon
Just got back from emceeing my first actual event outside of yoyos. Awesome show, had alot of fun.
The theme was other occupations and it was quite amazing to see teachers come in as nurses, safari explorers (crazy), lawyers, princesses, we had a few flight stewardesses, pilots, like the whole Tan Tock Seng Hospital (doctors nurses etc.), and a very rare specimen of the samsui woman (who eventually won Best Dressed).
Though there were some minor slip ups here and there it felt very nice. When the crowd is enthusiastic, and (most of) your jokes work, and the food is good, people are generally happy.
During the dinner they played a video of some of the students saying their thanks and sending their love and greeting and I really felt abit like crying.
It's difficult to put in words but I just felt incredibly honoured to host the event for the most inspirational, hardworking people in the world. They don't have their work cut out for them. They're working with some of the most difficult students. On a daily basis taking the abuse, making sure no one kills each other, getting the lessons across, juggling the crazy amount of admin work, marking the assignments, clearing emails, and still retaining some semblance of sanity in themselves, takes a certain kind of amazing.

So thanks goes out to the very kind teachers and staff from Fuchun Secondary School. It was a great honour and I hope you guys had as much fun as me!
All the teachers of the world, I really want to wish you guys a very happy teachers' day. Enjoy yourselves because you truly deserve it.
:-)
