But Whip's wicked spraycan control and too-cool-for-school artwork makes the 1% look all that much more special.

Let The Whole City Hear You!!

From Baybeats Day 1

Note: At 3:07 the vocalist actually signals to the drummer to go one more chorus for the crowd to sing. Sweet.
You can't really hear it well but there were a fair number of people singing. Considering they're a foreign Indie band and the song's in Malay, shit sounded phenomenal.

Saturdays Are For The Hardcore: Baybeats Day 2

So after a sleepless night and running around doing 4 shows I'm mad tired. I reach Esplanade got a seat to watch The Marilyns and freaking fell asleep (sorry) waiting for my friend.
Then we went to watch Meza Virs which sounded weird on their MySpace. But their live set killed everything that came before and after them. They're like a Heavy Goth Metal band, rockin' out in leather trench coats and heavy make up, I really expected them to sound like a joke.
But once they started though I was quite blown away. Hard ass band, with screaming/growling vocals that actually sound good (rare) and a female vocalist to balance it all up. They stayed in their theatrical Goth character almost throughout the whole set. Even in between songs, the frontman(pic above) keeps his growl while speaking to the crowd. So imagine just before his last song, trying to get the (already chaotic) crowd to go crazy one last time he growls
I want to see the biggest moshpit in the history of Singapore open up from the front to the back. I don't want to see any Kung Fu shit in there. Someone falls down you pick him up.
*Kids start moshing even before the song starts
Not fucking now. (Ed. note: still growling)Why are you guys so fucking kan cheong.
I stayed awake for like 8 hours after that.
It's Day 3 today, with headlining band Anberlin and the much talked about Inch Chua. But the rain is not looking good for the field where we stand on.

Boomst~! : Baybeats Day 1

When Live music works out it really can be wonderful. For me at least.
West Grand Boulevard was good.
There was a decent Chursh-sounding band which was ok.
Homogenic was decent but too much can be boring.
Estranged from Malaysia started ok and proceeded to tear up the stage. Tour de Force.

I was worried that Great Spy Experiment would not be able to do better then them. They didn't let that happen. Killed everything that came before them. Super encore. I am proud of our music. You guys rocked hard.
That's just Day 1. If the 2 more days stay this good it'd be the best Baybeats I know. Anberlin & Love Me Butch Still to come!

8.28.2009

BAYBEATS IS TOMORROW

Friday through to Sunday. The acts that so far are looking slightly more exciting include Inch Chua, Love Me Butch, Homogenic and headliners Anberlin (Massive!).
It's looking like I wouldn't be able to watch The Great Spy Experiment in action tomorrow late night. So PLEASE go and watch for me, send them my massive shouts and claps cos the local bands need all the support they can get and I think this band has the talent and ability to make even bigger things happen. They just need your love.

PLEASE. For the future of Singaporean music, their set is at 10:45p.m. @ Baybeat's Powerhouse (Esplanade).

Busy Saturday

11:00a.m. @ City Harvest Jurong (no I'm not Christian we're just performing)
1:00p.m. @ City Harvest Jurong (see above)
4:30p.m. @ Takashimaya Civic Plaza (President Star Charity. The man himself will be there!)
5:30p.m. @ Takashimaya Lvl 3 Toys Department
Come down to say hi whatever if anyone's around the area/bored.
Here's hoping I'll have enough energy for Baybeats after all that's done.

Stoked Americans

Some young artists (who are going to hopefully kick Jeff Koon's and Hirst's diamond covered ass) talk about their work backed by some nice zoned out tunes. I like how they bothered to do this in addition to the show. I also like how the whole tone of the video reflects what the youth as a collective consciousness feel about society today.

In May 2009 Gallery Crawl interviewed five graduate students receiving Masters of Fine Arts degrees from Mills College in Oakland, California. All experiment with multiple mediums including sculpture, drawing, fiber arts, painting, and new media. In their thesis exhibition, collectively titled Young Americans, each student presented a body of work completed during the two-year MFA program.

I think more artists need to explain a little more and stop conveniently using the "open to your interpretation" excuse.

Technology Never Made Us Happier.

That's what I said. But I really don't know why I'm so happy getting my new phone. Maybe it's because the older one is completely unusable (2 minutes of talk-time!). Maybe it's because the Nokia 6700 is black and is sexy.

I'm actually freakin amazed at what my phone can do. It's actually stuff that's been around for a while but I'm just that damned Old School to not have ever used 'em. It's got internet (Expensive but amazing), an Organiser to keep me from forgetting, and a decent camera with flash! There's MSN FREE (Which means while I'm stuck in a boring lecture I can ask Ah-P who's rockin' it in Taiwan)! I used to think that mobile MSN thing was a really geeky thing to have but now that I have it I think it's the coolest. I'm selective like that.
I haven't even tried the youtube (probably expensive), Flickr and FREE Facebook (OMG) but right now phone is lookin amazing.
Matter fact I'm actually quite sure somewhere inside I'll find something that'll save the World.

It's funny how amidst all the wonders in my palm now, the only thing I'm missing is my monophonic, straight from the ring tone composer days Super Mario ring tone which disapppeared with my first lost phone :(
Anyone who helps me obtain it gets a FREE..uh.... FREE! Yeah. Singaporeans let's get down!

New Environment

In like 6 hours. New school, new people, new system, new work. Exciting and nervous and not helping me sleep. New 1.5 hour travelling route. Not sexy.

8.24.2009

Remember Fish Language?

Fish Language is now a World Champion, with one of the most technical routines (and last trick) ever.

8.22.2009

The Horror.

That is 30 kids screaming at you at the same time. You have volume control on your speakers. I get blown to the back of the stage. Everytime.

8.21.2009

Celine + Owen

Celine and Owen are siblings that come to my shows alot. Really funny 2 kids. They're as irritating as any other kids (Celine especially lol) but because they do it in a cute & innocent way, I actually find it funny when they cut into my conversations. How unfair the world is, to non-cute people :(

Celine Luk Yan Ling (sp?) totally looking like the auntie she's going to be in like 47 years.

I think they both have become really good with yoyos considering their age. They both can do forward pass!

The dribble contest we ran on the 2nd last day of Takashimaya I think. I am always amazed at how much fun the kids have with yoyos and I feel obligated to make sure as many of them have as much fun as they can while they're young before they grow into boring adults? am I making sense?

8.16.2009

Single.

And it broke my heart when she told me she was a single parent, raising a single family, on a single island.
I'm still quite sick. Still working, still trying my best to keep smiling.

8.13.2009

Suit Up!

Went shopping for a suit (on a serious budget) to wear at Roy's Wedding (Which was phenomenal. More on that soon). I think every guy should wear a suit at least once in their lives. Automatically makes guys look so much better. Pity our weather doesn't allow us to suit up more often. I am now positively looking for more opportunities to wear my suit.
Left: Pinstriped Suit from G2 Black Label Right: Black Suit by G2000

I ended up getting the one on the left. Which was the first suit I ever put on really. I think I also do have a better understanding of how complicated it is to make a good suit. Not just a blazer. A whole suit.

Can you put a price, on your dreams?

Heath Ledger. Johnny Depp. Jude Law. Colin Farrell.
I'd watch this based on its delicious name alone. but the trailer makes it look too awesome to miss. If this doesn't make it to our island I'm going to have to protest. I just hope they don't need to market it as Heath's last act.

8.12.2009

Sick.

Been battling cough and slight flu the last few weeks. Last night my body finally got too pissed off and raged into a fever. The polyclinic experience wasn't exactly delightful either. Let's hope the medicine helps this time.

Also, I'll be at (if I get well) Singapore Toy Games & Comic Convention doing yoyos! So if you're there do drop by to say hi. Tentatively my schedule is
Fri 11 a.m. - 7 p.m.
Sat 1 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Sun 1 p.m. - 9 p.m.

Also, Imaginary Friends, probably Singapore's best homegrown Illustration Studio will be there. They've been making waves everywhere they've touched, growing from strength to strength throughout the years. Quick sample of their awesome work!

They were the 1st to make the DotA loading screen look oh so pimp.

They've been doing alot of Star Wars related stuff too!

Don't know what they'll be doing there though but I hope long time friend Brandon who does some amazing work for Imaginary Friends will be there! *crosses fingers.

8.11.2009

More coming!

Haven't had much time to post cos of work but alot coming up next few days!!

Hiroki on Damien

My stay in London coincided by chance with the release of a famous artist's latest work: a skull covered in diamonds.
I'm not sure what the true intention of the artist's message was, but I sensed an irony connected to the abundance of money in the world and global agreement of what "valuable" is.

Everyday, crowds of people would line up outside the White Cube Gallery to catch a glimpse, and it seemed that this piece, valued in the tens of millions of punds, was sending a strong message that mocked the ideals of market fundamentalism. The excitement on London over the skull's universally perceived value made me feel uneasy.

In 2008, our global financial system and perception of value it created, experienced a massive and undeniable collapse. Has the global trend of financial and monetary motivation and our so-called "universal perception of value" reached a deadlock?

Hiroki Nakamura is the man behind Visvim.
Damien Hirst is the richest artist alive in a world that puts artistic value on dead animals in formaldehyde.

I Suck At Shooting So Bad That I'm Missing You: The Fish Monologue

Fish is probably the most brash, obnoxious female I've ever met period. It wouldn't be so bad if she looked that way too. But as you can see she actually looks decent. We butt heads all the time maybe cos I'm the only one who bothers to/can argue with her.

Maybe because I felt that if I interacted with her long enough I might find an actual lady hidden somewhere underneath that thrashy personality. No luck there.

Whatever the reason Fish keeps her other (less irritating) side away from public eyes, it's funny how it makes me wonder how much of our true self we put out there anyway. There'll always be portions of ourselves we keep to ourselves. I guess she just keeps a little more?

In a warped way I think (the way death reminds us of the value of life) Fish just reminds me of our natural need & tendency towards hypocrisy.

Too Damn Beautiful.

Lifetime Collective S/S10 by Salazar
*Warning - very slight nudity.

Don't know of anywhere that carries their stuff which will probably be expensive anyway. But they seem to be a really interesting group of artists.

8.04.2009

Hardcore. Kinda.

Saw this dude and a few followers at Tampines a while back. Uses a very clever technique/s. Part stencil and funneling (?), part scraping that I've honestly never seen before (impressive). More of his work @ Night Sky Paintings.

Seen him hitting up Orchard and getting filmed by TV crews so I guess it's good he's getting some media attention. He definitely deserves it considering the amount of work he's putting in. His mask doesn't filter out all that much harmful gas and squatting there all day painting with such a tricky medium is hella tiring.

I just wish he'd evolve as an artist as opposed to a novel dreamscape illustrator.

Either ways it's good to see somebody pushing boundaries, and legally too.

8.02.2009

Thanks.

For dropping by. I really appreciate it. I'm really sorry I can't entertain you guys much cos in the end it is a customer service job.
Jean, Ken, the Nightmare Student, the Paramedic, and the Lecturer.
You really made my day.

Baker's Dozen.

All I probably very casually jokingly said was that I missed his mom's muffins and Darrell actually told her and she actually made 2 huge boxes for the shop and 12 (SPECIALLY!) for me. THANK YOU!

They're a meanass muffin. More chocolate then you can handle. Overwhelmingly chcolatey. Which in my books is really freakin good.

Once again I want to say that Bakers are some of the nicest people I know. I cant explain why in words very well. But I feel that Bakers give so much of themselves in the baking process, and only wish you enjoy the products of their love in return.
